Dyer’ first permanent settlers arrived in the area in the early 1830’s. These settlers were mainly Prussian farmers, but also included a variety of tradesmen that supported the farming community which eventually took hold. Dyer was was formally incorporated in 1910, and the town helped address the rapidly expanding need for housing in Lake County, which was transforming from a farming community into a burgeoning industrial region. Dyer was initially divided into three districts (also called wards) and the local government consisted of a trustee from each of the 3 wards. The town was named after Martha Dyer, the wife of prominent early local landowner Aaron Hart.
